2022 – #52 Ancestors Challenge – Week 18 – SOCIAL

Week 18 (May 3-9): Social

Maybe you have a story or photo of an ancestor at an ice cream social. Maybe your ancestor was part of a society, like the Masons or Odd Fellows. Maybe you’ve made a connection with a cousin or made a great discovery thanks to social media.

When I see “Social,” I think of my father’s application for Social Security. That’s because I am having a hard time getting it. I am close now. Below is what they last sent me. Notice that they blocked out the name of his parents. Of course, that is what I needed. I have also sent for his birth certificate from Alabama, but they can’t find him.

In 2012 I sent the below letter to Maryland, but I still have not received a complete file. The U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007, on Ancestry.com, have the following information for his number: Aug 1941 – Name listed as James Willie Chappell, Jr. and parents are James W Chappell and Anna Miller; 2 Jul 2002 – last name is Chappelle; and 23 Apr 2004 – the name is James Chappelle.

  1. How frustrating that they blocked out his parents names. Aaaargh! I wish you all the best with your research. Sometimes it’s hard going but just keep chipping away.
