2022 – #52 Ancestors Challenge – Week 20 – Textile

This week’s theme is “Textile.” Clothing, quilts, weaving — there are so many ways to talk about textiles in our family history! Be creative with this week’s theme!

My father was living with his mother and grandmother in 1930. His grandmother Lillie was a dressmaker. She was also listed in the Cleveland City Directory in 1928 as a dress ulnr. She was a seamstress, needlewoman, tailoress, outfitter, a person who made alterations on clothes. I hadn’t thought about that when my father started making suits back in the 70s. Could he have picked up that skill from his grandmother? I knew she was a seamstress and had used it to identify her from the other fifteen or so Lillie Miller’s in city directories. Below is a picture of my brother wearing a suit my father made back in the ’70s.

  1. And that is one fashionable suit! Fabulous pic. Yes I wonder how much our parents inherited from our grandparents in terms of skills. I always knew my Mum was a great seamstress but I have only just realised that probably her mother taught her to sew. Silly me. Talk about slow!
